The United National Movement opposition party – the largest opposition group in the country in office between 2003 and 2012, on Tuesday proposed a draft resolution in support of Ukraine, amid the latter’s war with Russia.
Khatia Dekanoidze, the chair of the party in the state legislature and former law enforcement official, read out the text about the military aggression, genocide and war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine since the outbreak of hostilities in late February.
She said the Georgian parliament “should adopt a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory, acts of genocide and crimes against humanity, systematic violation of human rights, acts of violence, and other crimes under international law”.
“All countries in the civilized world adopt such resolutions. I have no hope that you [the ruling party] will accept this resolution, but I wanted the citizens of Georgia to hear once again that Russia is committing genocide in Ukraine,” the MP said.
