UNM, Strategy Agmashenebeli alliance unity of “two losers” – ruling party officials

The ruling Georgian Dream party officials on Friday claimed the recently established political platform by the United National Movement and Strategy Agmashenebeli opposition parties were a “unity of two losers”, which they said would be unable to make any changes in the next year’s Parliamentary elections. 

 

In his remarks, Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the ruling party,  claimed the domestic opposition faced “fundamental problems” and the “only political actor” that  acted “in accordance with the public’s interests”, was the GD. 

 

Thea Tsulukiani, the Vice Prime Minister, compared the alliance with “two dead”, who she claimed had “no potential” to achieve any success, adding Strategy Agmashenebeli, whose leader Giorgi Vashadze earlier distanced itself from the UNM, had returned to the party “which he has always belonged to ideologically”. 

 

The official, however, noted the presence of a “weak” opposition was not in state interests and that she welcomed new political groups composed of new faces. 

 

In his comments while presenting the new platform, Vashadze said it would be a movement for “victory, changes and the liberation from the pro-Russian government”. 

 

“We are creating a platform for victory, which Georgian citizens have been waiting for years”, he said, adding it would  be a non-partisan platform that would involve “all patriotic, honest and professional people”. 

 

The chairman of the UNM, Levan Khabeishvili, noted “all pro-Western parties” would be welcomed in the alliance. 

 

The Droa and Girchi More Freedom opposition parties said earlier this week they would not join the platform.
