US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan does not share the position of the ruling Georgian Dream party that the State Inspector’s Service, which was created in 2018 to look into alleged offenses committed by law enforcers, was not abolished.

The parliament has already approved the bill which envisages the abolishment of the State Inspector’s Service and instead offers the creation of two agences, one which will investigate alleged crimes by law enforcers and another for personal data.

State Inspector Londa Toloraia says that the agency ‘was punished’ for its unbiased reports and decisions. Degnan says that if it was not an abolishment of the agency, then why the state inspector and her deputies were dismissed before their terms in the role expired.

She said that such decisions as it was made towards the independent agency should have been ‘well-explained.’ Degnan noted that it is a big loss to dismiss a professional who was fulfilling her duty with dignity.
