US Ambassador says accusations by former MPs of Georgian ruling party “conspiracy”

US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said Wednesday that allegations by former MPs of the ruling Georgian Dream party towards the Embassy were “groundless and conspiracy theories”. 

In her comments, Degnan said she was not well-aware what were the goals of the former GD MPs, who left the party in June in a bid “to tell the public the truth” and had accused Degnan of “attacking the Georgian Government, dragging Georgia into Russia’s war in Ukraine and interfering in the domestic judiciary”.

“All I can say is that the accusations they have made against the American Embassy and others are a groundless conspiracy theory that has no basis in fact. They [the allegations] are not backed by facts”, said the Ambassador. 

She said that the US Embassy “works with all political parties in Georgia and has been doing so for the past 30 years” to “ensure Georgia’s democratic development.” 

Degnan suggested that “any attempt” to accuse the Embassy or others of existing political polarisation in Georgia, aimed to “shift the blame onto our Western partners who have only been helping this country for the last 30 years”.
