US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan has welcomed the initiative of president Salome Zurabishvili to make peace between Georgian political parties to ease polarization.

Degnan says that the implementation of the initiative is important for peace and stability in the country.

She said that the president is aware that the process will take time and effort.

Imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili claims that ‘reconciliation’ is in ‘everyone’s interests.’

However, his United National Movement party has launched a mass hunger-strike protest to force the government release Saakashvili.

The ruling party says that reconciliation is possible if Saakashvili and his party admit to the ‘grave crimes they committed while in office and then leave politics.’
