The US Department of State is closely monitoring the health of former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, Voice of America cited the body as saying on Monday.
“The protection of Mr. Saakashvili’s health and protection of human rights is the responsibility of the Government of Georgia. Based on the recommendations of the public defender’s medical experts, we will continue to advocate with the relevant persons to take the necessary steps for Saakashvili’s health and well-being,” VoA cited the US Department of State.
A trial over Saakashvili’s release on medical grounds or postponement of his sentence is scheduled on Wednesday, with Saakashvili expected to participate in the hearing remotely.
