Marking NATO’s Day, the US Embassy to Georgia stated today that Russia’s war in Ukraine has demonstrated to the world how people can be misled by disinformation.
“We have all seen by now interviews with ordinary Russian citizens obliviously repeating the Kremlin’s narrative, claiming that the Russian army is ‘liberating’ the Ukrainian people. We who live in societies without media censorship have seen what this Russian liberation looks like: thousands of civilians killed, millions displaced, cities destroyed.| said the embassy.
The embassy highlighted the work of the NATO and EU Information Centers in Georgia, a network of eleven locations, which have been fighting disinformation for many years.
“Through their seminars, surveys, online engagements, and hundreds of other activities, they’ve reached thousands of Georgians to raise awareness about NATO and the EU and build resilience against disinformation. The U.S. Embassy continues to support these efforts via NATO and EU Centers and many other organizations in Georgia,” said the embassy.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Hostilities have been in progress since then.
