Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, on Wednesday said the US political decisions on Georgia would depend on the actions of the Georgian government.

During a briefing held at the State Department, Miller said that the US was continuously reviewing its relations with Georgia.

“If you look at our steps, we made it clear that we would judge the Georgian government based on their political decisions. Our political decisions depend on their actions,” Miller noted.

He further highlighted that the US Secretary of State had announced a review of relations with Georgia, which included the introduction of additional restrictions and the first sanctions against Georgian officials.

“We always hope that all countries that start to backslide on the path of democracy or European integration will change their course,” Miller said. “Especially when it is visible that the people of such a country want a change of course. At the same time, we are developing our political decisions considering the real possibility that [Georgia’s government] may not change course.”
