US ready for powerful economic sanctions if Russia decides to mount an invasion

US President Joe Biden has stated that it is still “very much a possibility” that Russia could invade Ukraine, warning Russia of powerful economic sanctions if it acts in the way.

He also stated yesterday that if Russia decides to invade, that will also have consequences ‘here at home.’ 

“But the American people understand that defending democracy and liberty is never without cost,” Biden said, pointing to the possible hike in energy price. 

He expressed hope that the ongoing tension will be eased via diplomacy. 

February 16 has been circulated as a day of attack on Ukraine in international media. 

Russia, which is now at the Ukrainian border with almost 100,000 troops, is demanding ‘security guarantees’ from the US and NATO, including the promise that the alliance will not add Georgia and Ukraine as new members.
