US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken may come to Ukraine in May. In Kiev, he will discuss a possible meeting between US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This is reported by CNN, citing a source in the Ukrainian government.
In particular, it is noted that Blinken will arrive in Ukraine before the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Blinken's visit to Ukraine could ease the European country's concerns about a possible meeting between Biden and Putin this summer," the article says.
The publication notes that the fact that the Biden administration will send its most senior diplomat to Ukraine sends a clear signal that Washington supports this country and values it as an ally.
"Blinken's visit to Ukraine will be one of the opportunities to discuss a potential meeting between Biden and Zelensky while the US president is in Europe this summer," a Ukrainian government source told CNN.
The publication notes that the secretary of state has already talked with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba several times, including at a meeting in Brussels earlier this month.
Diplomat Daniel Fried, who served as the US ambassador to Poland from 1997 to 2000, called a potential trip to Blinken in Ukraine "a very good move."
"A correct Ukrainian strategy requires two parts," he said. "One hand wrapped around their shoulder to help resist the Kremlin's aggression, and a foot behind their back to force them to fix the situation at home so that Ukraine would not be a corrupt state vulnerable to Russian aggression," Fried said.
