John Kirby, the strategic communications coordinator of the US National Security Council, on Monday said Washington saw “no signs” Russia had plans to use nuclear weapons or hit the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, amid Kyiv’s warnings of possible threats.

The official said the US was observing the plant “closely”, adding “we have not seen any indication so far that this threat is imminent, but we are watching it very, very carefully”.

Speaking about plans to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, Kirby noted that Russia is a nuclear power and the US has “maximum control over its nuclear capabilities”.
