US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on 16 December that further sanctions against Georgia are being prepared and will be implemented in the coming weeks. Speaking at a press briefing, Miller reiterated the United States’ “deep concerns” about the state of Georgian democracy and actions by the ruling Georgian Dream party that have undermined it.
“On Friday, we imposed 20 new visa restrictions on individuals connected to the government, who are responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia. We will take further actions in the coming weeks, including additional sanctions. I cannot provide more details at this time,” Miller stated.
The US State Department’s recent visa restrictions targeted about 20 Georgian individuals, including government ministers, parliamentarians, and officials from law enforcement and security agencies, as well as private citizens. These measures were introduced in response to actions deemed detrimental to Georgia’s democratic processes.
