US President Donald Trump announced on July 7 that the United States will send additional weapons to Ukraine, primarily for defensive purposes. He made the remarks at the White House ahead of a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump’s statement comes roughly a week after reports revealed that the US had suspended the delivery of certain types of weapons to Ukraine due to concerns over depleted Pentagon stockpiles and the need to reassess the situation on the ground.
“Ukraine is under heavy attack, many people are dying — they must be able to defend themselves,” Trump said, highlighting the urgency of continued support.
The US President also reiterated his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he remains frustrated that Putin "has not stopped."
Following Trump’s announcement, the Pentagon confirmed that additional defensive weapons would be sent to Ukraine. In a statement released on July 7, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that, under President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense is delivering more weapons to help Ukrainians defend themselves as the US continues efforts to establish lasting peace.
The Pentagon did not disclose the specific types of weapons being sent.
