The United States Embassy in Tbilisi on Tuesday marked the 35th anniversary of the April 9 tragedy, a pivotal moment in Georgia’s history. On this day in 1989, peaceful demonstrators in Tbilisi were met with violence by Soviet troops, resulting in the loss of 21 lives and leaving hundreds injured.
In a statement released by the embassy, the memory of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom was honored. “on April 9, we remember the 21 people killed and hundreds injured by the hands of the Soviet army, who were demanding freedom through a peaceful demonstration. We will honor the memory of those who could not witness the freedom and independence for which they gave their lives most dearly,” the statement read.
The embassy emphasized the enduring values that bind the United States and Georgia, stating, “on such days, we feel the most strongly why our common, highest values of America-Georgia unite us so closely: independence, freedom and democracy.”
The British Embassy in Tbilisi reflected on the courage of those who stood against the oppression of the Soviet Union. “today, we remember and honor all those who fought against the Soviet Union 35 years ago, for the independence, sovereignty and prosperity of Georgia,” the statement read.
The embassy reaffirmed its support for Georgia’s aspirations for a strong and sovereign nation. “We support the citizens of Georgia in building a strong, free and sovereign country,” the statement concluded, echoing the sentiments of unity and solidarity with the Georgian people on this anniversary.
