The foreign ministers of the Weimar Triangle -Germany, France, and Poland have issued a statement reaffirming their support for Georgia’s democratic and European aspirations while expressing deep concern over the actions of the Georgian government, which have led to the suspension of the country’s EU accession process.
Citing the European Council’s June 27 declaration, the ministers deplored the negative trends in Georgia’s governance, including the enforcement of the controversial “Transparency Law” saying it stigmatizes NGOs with foreign funding, puts restrictions on LGBTI people’s rights, and increasing attacks on civil society and independent journalists.
The ministers also condemned the rise in anti-EU rhetoric from Georgian authorities.
“The EU will not tolerate the spreading of false narratives about European positions and policies by Georgia’s authorities,” the statement read.
The statement calls for the Georgian government to ensure free and fair elections, adhere to OSCE recommendations, and reverse its current course to preserve the scope and depth of EU-Georgia relations.
“We expect the Georgian authorities to ensure that the upcoming elections in Georgia are free and fair and follow the OSCE ODIHR recommendations, including the ability to conduct a free and safe electoral campaign,” the ministers stressed.
They also reiterated their commitment to supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, expressing hope that Georgia’s Government will re-commit to implement the reform priorities defined by the country’s EU candidate status.
