Following Donald Trump’s election as the 47th President of the United States, Georgian constitutional expert Vakhtang Khmaladze expressed skepticism over the Georgian government’s apparent optimism, particularly that of the ruling Georgian Dream party. Speaking with Front News, Khmaladze questioned why Georgian Dream anticipates favorable changes in US foreign policy under a new Trump administration, stating that past Republican Party policies toward Georgia are unlikely to shift dramatically.

“The Republican Party’s approach to Georgia has been consistent, and I doubt it will change now. I don’t understand why Georgian Dream is celebrating Trump’s victory as if it signals a major policy shift,” Khmaladze remarked. He noted that even during Trump’s first term, expectations of significant changes in American foreign policy had been “misguided.”

On the potential impact of Trump’s return to office on global affairs, particularly regarding Ukraine, Khmaladze noted Trump’s often unpredictable approach but added he does not foresee Trump halting support for Ukraine.

“Trump’s actions are often energetic, as seen in his previous term, but I don’t expect any major changes like ceasing support for Ukraine,” he said.

Donald Trump was recently elected the 47th President of the United States.
