Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on ending the war remain ongoing, with two key issues still unresolved, US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday.
“One of them concerns territory. The Russians want around 6,000 square kilometers of land that they have not yet taken militarily. That is what they are demanding. On the other hand, Ukrainians want security guarantees, whether from Europeans or others,” Vance explained.
He noted that Kyiv seeks assurances that if an agreement is reached, Russia will not return in a few months or years with further demands.
“In this sense, we have made incredible progress simply by identifying and defining these two main problems. The real question is whether the Russians and Ukrainians will walk through the doors to peace that President Trump has opened,” Vance said.
According to him, US negotiators continue to work on the matter. “Today, I discussed this with Special Representative Steve Witkoff. We will keep working on it, and I believe that ultimately we will reach a peaceful resolution,” the Vice President added.
