Vice Speaker Tsilosani points to Ukraine, Moldova as models for banning opposition parties

Vice Speaker of the Parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, Nino Tsilosani, on Friday highlighted Georgia could follow the example of Ukraine and Moldova, where “opposition parties were banned without negative reactions from domestic or international actors”.

She suggested that a similar approach in Georgia, targeting the United National Movement, the former ruling party between 2004 and 2012, should not be met with indignation.

Tsilosani emphasized by electing the GD in the October 26 general elections, the party would fulfill a promise to hold the UNM and “affiliated parties” accountable for their alleged crimes.

The GD urged the public to vote for them in the elections to secure a constitutional majority, which they claimed would allow the party to “ban the UNM and their satellite parties”.

The party also pledged to adopt the bills against alleged LGBT propaganda.
