Judge who annulled election results claims decision was in country’s interest

Tetri Tskaro District Court Judge Vladimir Khuchua has publicly addressed his recent decision to annul specific polling station results, emphasizing that his actions were taken “in the name of Georgia” and driven by a commitment to judicial integrity, fairness, and the rule of law. The ruling, which responded to claims of ballot secrecy violations, has since garnered significant media attention and public interest.

“I made this decision in the name of Georgia, based on my judicial oath, conscience, and the supremacy of law, as well as the evidence I examined in the courtroom alongside all parties,” Judge Khuchua stated.

He clarified that his primary objective was a fair resolution, based solely on the evidence at hand, rather than on how the decision might be received.

“The strength of law is considerable, and the right to ballot secrecy is a fundamental value. Violations of this principle are serious enough that Georgian legislation prescribes criminal liability for breaches,” he noted.

Judge Khuchua’s decision on November 4 followed a petition from non-governmental organizations and opposition coalitions calling for the annulment of election results at certain polling stations. In a recent interview with TV Pirveli, Khuchua underscored that he acted independently, without concern for external approval, assessing only the legal stakes involved.
