NATO member states have drawn up new measures aimed at maintaining and strengthening long-term support for Ukraine amid growing support for the far-right in Europe and the possibility that Republican Donald Trump will win the US presidential election and cut military aid to Ukraine, according to informed sources in NATO and the US.

The Wall Street Journal reported,NATO will announce new steps at the summit of the leaders of the member states, which will be hosted by Washington next week. The new measures include sending a senior NATO official to Ukraine and setting up a new command in Germany to coordinate equipment and military training for Ukraine.

Sources indicate that the operation will involve up to 700 troops from the United States and other NATO member states, with NATO largely taking over the mission that the Americans have been carrying out since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The new initiative, which NATO has been developing for several months, has gained special relevance after US President Joe Biden showed a weak result in a televised debate with his opponent Donald Trump in the November elections on June 27, and Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the amount of money spent to support Ukraine.
