Mamuka Mdinaradze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party in Parliament, voiced concerns on Thursday over the reported engagement of Zurab Adeishvili, the wanted former Prosecutor General of Georgia who currently serves as Chief Advisor for Reforms to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, with European officials.
Mdinaradze suggested that Adeishvili’s involvement in foreign meetings and discussions, particularly on legal issues, could incite anti-Western sentiments in the country, citing the former official’s association with “very serious crimes” during the United National Movement Government.
Mdinaradze’s remarks followed media reports of Adeishvili’s recent visit to the German Bundestag as part of a Ukrainian delegation.
Highlighting Adeishvili’s past involvement in “racketeering, torture, rape, and murder,” Mdinaradze questioned the appropriateness of his participation in discussions on legal principles. He emphasized Adeishvili’s “leadership role” in a system tainted by these offenses “alongside former President Mikheil Saakashvili”.
Mdinaradze asserted that Adeishvili’s past actions disqualified him from such discussions and expressed concern over perceptions labeling the former official as a reformer. He urged scrutiny of such assertions and cautioned European partners to be wary of their interactions with Adeishvili, citing potential harm to justice, truth, and morality.
Adeishvili was sentenced in absentia to 1.6 years in prison in 2020 for the closure of Iberia TV in 2004. He has also been sentenced in absentia for the illegal raid on Imedi TV in 2007, illegal confiscation of Akura vinery, and abuse of office in the Cartu Bank case. Adeishvili was sentenced in 2021 in absentia to six years in prison for kidnapping and abuse of official authority in the case of former opposition leader Koba Davitashvili.
