Fifty Georgian opposition MPs on Thursday appealed to the members of the EU and NATO following Russia’s plans to open a new naval base in Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia region, and urged them to take actions to “stop” Russia’s revisionist policy both in Ukraine and Georgia.
“The civilized West must restrain the manifestation of Russia’s revisionist policy both in Ukraine and in Georgia. We call and appeal to the international community, Georgia’s allies and strategic partners to take a firm and united position against Russia’s continued occupation and annexation policy, which is the only way for Georgia’s democracy, security, prosperity and long-term peaceful development”, the statement said.
They also called on the international community to “effectively use” the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights over the August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia and its consequences, as an administrative practice of Russia’s occupation and human rights violations in the regions of Georgia.
“We confirm our readiness to continue intensive and proactive cooperation with legislative bodies and parliamentary assemblies to coordinate efforts to protect the rules-based international system and the fundamental norms of international law”, the MPs said.
They added “since the ruling party actually refused to adopt a joint parliamentary resolution over the issue, in this way we share with you the united position of the parliamentary opposition”.
Aslan Bzhania, the de facto President of Abkhazia region, last month said he had concluded a new deal with Russia over the launch of the country’s new naval base in the city of Ochamchire, on the backdrop of Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
