Georgian Expert Zaal Anjaparidze on Thursday criticised the recent statement by Anitta Hipper, spokesperson on foreign affairs and security policy for the European Commission, calling it an example of the EU’s “double standards.”

“Judge for yourselves what ‘logic’ lies behind the European Commission’s statement: it commissioned a study, paid for it, published the results on its official website, and now claims to have no connection to it”, Anjaparidze wrote on social media.

The discussion stems from the Chandler Good Government Index 2025, produced by the Chandler Institute of Governance, which included several key indices showing Georgia had achieved success across all measured areas.

According to Anjaparidze, however, the European Commission distanced itself from these findings because they did not fit its political narrative. He said the European Union recognises only those realities that serve the political interests of its bureaucracy, while distancing itself from findings that do not align with its agenda. He pointed out that in this case, the EU downplayed a study in which Georgia received positive indicators.

He further suggested this dynamic was one of the reasons behind the Georgian Government’s recent decision to postpone EU membership negotiations until 2028.

“In my view, one of the reasons the Government chose to delay negotiations was the counterproductive nature of dealing with the current euro-bureaucracy. In 2029, the European Parliament will hold new elections to appoint new EU leadership. Hopefully, that leadership will adopt a healthier stance toward Georgia”, Anjaparidze concluded.
