Political analyst Zaal Anjaparidze has commented on recent developments in Georgia’s political scene, alleging that the think tank Geocase’ - traditionally seen as an analytical organization - was preparing to transform into a political entity.
Anjaparidze on Monday claimed Geocase, led by Victor Kipiani, was “halfway into politics” and “playing on the opposition’s side.” He further claimed that Kipiani, who “once worked close to Bidzina Ivanishvili [ the founder and honorary chair of the ruling Georgian Dream],” was “reportedly dismissed over financial irregularities.”
“Movements have begun on Georgia’s political field. The Geocase analytical center, which has partly transitioned into politics and aligned itself with the opposition, now plans to become a political subject, as its head has stated. He once worked in Ivanishvili’s circle and, as they say, was dismissed for financial fraud,” Anjaparidze wrote on social media.
The analyst also asserted that the West was seeking to introduce new, controllable political forces in Georgia to replace what he described as the “discredited opposition.”
“It’s almost certain this decision at Geocase was made after consultations with their Western curators. Judging by its composition, the organization clearly shows the kind of political group it aims to become,” Anjaparidze added.
He argued that, following the October 4 events, the opposition rally alongside local elections, and the growing disillusionment of opposition voters, “the West is attempting to bring in new forces it can manage.” According to him, the groups differed from the United National Movement (UNM) only in that they “did not participate in the abuses committed during 2003–2012,” but “share the same ideological roots.”
Anjaparidze concluded that the success of such movements “will depend on how quickly society can recognize their real political face.”
Geocase, established in 2020 and led by lawyer and analyst Victor Kipiani, describes itself as an independent, nonpartisan think tank focusing on foreign policy, security, and economic issues.
