Zaza Tavadze, a member of the For Georgia opposition party led by former prime minister Giorgi Gakharia, has accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of using a parliamentary investigative commission to pursue political vendettas.
Tavadze on Wednesday claimed that the commission’s conclusions amounted to a “chronicle of treason” that would eventually be used against the government in a free court.
Speaking at a briefing, Tavadze criticised the commission - established under the chairmanship of Vice Speaker Thea Tsulukiani - as “illegitimate” and politically motivated. He argued that while Gakharia’s name appeared 60 times in the report, influential judicial figures such as Levan Murusidze and Mikheil Chinchaladze were not mentioned at all.
“The real goal was not to investigate alleged abuses under the former United National Movement government, but to neutralise Giorgi Gakharia politically,” Tavadze said. He added that the accusations mirrored those made by “the occupation regime,” claiming Gakharia had defended Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The opposition politician also dismissed the commission’s work as poorly substantiated and described it as part of a wider pre-election “farce” designed to entrench Georgian Dream’s hold on power.
Parliament approved the commission’s conclusions in a plenary vote, with 85 MPs backing the report.
