Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine’s Freyja anti-ballistic missile system could become operational within the next 12 months, strengthening the country’s ability to defend itself with domestically produced weapons.
“I hope that within the next 12 months we will see Freyja in action,” Zelenskyy said.
He said the threat posed by ballistic missiles was likely to increase globally, describing it as one of the major consequences of conflicts involving Russia and Iran.
“Therefore, Freyja must become a reality,” Zelenskyy said.
Ukrainian defence company Fire Point has released footage of its FP-7.X anti-ballistic missile, which is expected to form the basis of the Freyja missile defence system. The company carried out the first test of the FP-7.X missile in June.
Freyja is expected to enter service by the end of 2026.
On 13 July, the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom signed a joint declaration on the creation of an integrated missile defence coalition.
