Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Kyiv’s international partners to urgently provide additional air defence systems, saying Ukraine needs them “here and now” following Russia’s latest overnight missile and drone attack.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s Air Force managed to intercept only one ballistic missile during the overnight assault due to a shortage of interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defence system.
“Last night, Russia launched 35 missiles against Ukraine, including 27 ballistic missiles, as well as 185 attack drones of various types. Kyiv was the main target, but strikes also hit the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltava regions,” Zelenskyy said.
“The fact that only one ballistic missile was intercepted is solely because we do not have enough missiles for the Patriot system. This shortage enables Russia to carry out attacks that threaten people's lives,” he added.
Zelenskyy said Russia concentrated the heaviest strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, targeting residential infrastructure. He said 18 residential buildings, a school, the Embassy of Lithuania and infrastructure facilities were damaged.
“The Russians, as always, targeted residential buildings. Nine people were killed in this attack. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Dozens more were injured,” he said.
The President stressed that additional air defence capabilities are urgently needed rather than being held in reserve.
“It is important that our partners understand these resources are needed here and now, not stored in warehouses for hypothetical future scenarios. Every air defence package saves lives. Without them, every night brings new victims,” Zelenskyy said.
Russia launched a large-scale overnight ballistic missile attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region earlier today, killing nine people and injuring around 30 others, including four children.
