Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of violating a ceasefire agreement that was due to come into effect overnight on 6 May, saying Kyiv would determine its next steps based on evening military and intelligence assessments.

In a statement on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said Russian forces had continued offensive operations across key sections of the front line despite the announced truce. According to the Ukrainian president, Russian troops had already carried out nearly 30 assault operations since the start of the day.

He added that more than 20 air strikes had been recorded overnight and during the morning hours, involving the use of over 70 aerial bombs.

“Ukraine has made it clear that it will act symmetrically, given that Russia continues to request a ceasefire during Moscow’s parade through the media and social networks,” Zelenskyy said. “For any normal person, it is obvious that a full-scale war and daily killings are a bad backdrop for public celebrations.”

The Ukrainian president also said Russia must end the war, adding that despite internet shutdowns and communication restrictions, many Russians understood that their leadership “can leave the bunker and choose peace”.

Zelenskyy further noted Ukraine has already presented diplomatic proposals to Moscow and the only remaining requirement was for Russia to demonstrate genuine willingness to pursue peace.

“The Russian side violated the ceasefire agreement. Based on the evening reports from our military and intelligence services, we will determine our next steps,” he said.
