Ukraine will back a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, provided the meeting aims to secure a ceasefire and end the ongoing war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday.

Zelenskyy noted that while Trump was reportedly discussing Ukraine-related issues with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Ukraine’s support depended on the meeting’s outcome.

“You know our position, if there is a meeting that ultimately ensures a ceasefire and the end of the war, Ukraine will support any format”, Zelenskyy stated.

He added that if such meetings are held merely for political gain or fail to yield concrete results, Kyiv would not endorse them.

The comments came as Trump and Orbán held talks at the White House. Before his trip to Washington, Orbán told reporters that the war in Ukraine would be among the key topics discussed.

When asked ahead of the meeting whether he planned to meet Putin in Budapest, Trump responded that “it is always possible”, and described Orbán as “a great leader”.
