Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said he would be open to holding elections in Ukraine if the ongoing war with Russia comes to an end and conditions are safe.

Speaking at a press briefing in the Oval Office ahead of a high-stakes meeting with US President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy stressed that a truce was essential to ensure Ukrainians can participate in a “democratic, legal, and open election”.

“Yes, of course, we are open to election, yes. We have to do safety in circumstances, and a little bit, we need to work in parliament because during the war you cannot have elections,” he said.

Ukraine’s elections are currently suspended under martial law, imposed after Russia’s full-scale invasion more than three years ago.
