Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said Ukraine was prepared to observe a ceasefire during the Easter holidays, while also raising questions about whether Russia could use the pause to strengthen its positions.

Speaking in a statement, Zelenskyy said “we have supported any format for ending the war, as you know, but this must be done without compromising the dignity and independence of the state. We are ready for a ceasefire during the Easter holidays, whether a full ceasefire or a temporary suspension of hostilities in certain areas.”

He added that “normal people who respect life” were focused on achieving a permanent end to the conflict, not just a brief pause.

On the possibility that Russia could consolidate its positions during a short ceasefire, Zelenskyy said “they cannot strengthen anything in two or three days. We remember what they promised in three days and what they failed to deliver.”

This year, Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter on Sunday, 12 April.
