Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday said Ukrainian forces carried out overnight strikes against several strategic targets inside Russia, including an oil terminal in St Petersburg, facilities at the Kronstadt military base and a weapons-related enterprise in the Tambov region.
He claimed the operation involved units from the Security Service of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces, the Main Intelligence Directorate and the State Border Guard Service.
One of the main targets was the St Petersburg Oil Terminal, which Zelenskyy described as part of Russia's oil industry that supports the war effort. He noted that the facility is located around 1,100 kilometres from Ukraine's state border.
The president said Ukrainian forces also targeted military facilities at the Kronstadt base, located near St Petersburg.
A third strike was directed at an industrial site in Russia's Tambov region that, according to Zelenskyy, is involved in the production of weapons. The facility is situated nearly 600 kilometres from the front line.
"Thank you to our servicemembers for their precision. Ukraine's long-range sanctions plan is being implemented exactly as needed to bring peace closer," Zelenskyy said.
Russian authorities earlier reported a drone attack on an oil terminal at the Port of St Petersburg during the night of 3 June, which triggered a large fire.
The St Petersburg Oil Terminal is one of the largest oil handling facilities in north-western Russia.
