Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has invited US President Joe Biden to Kyiv to show the US’ support amid fears that Russia may invade the country.
“I am convinced that your visit to Kyiv in the coming days would be a powerful signal and help stabilize the situation,” the presidency quoted Zelensky as telling Biden in a phone conversation which took place on Sunday.
The White House has made no mention of the invitation in its readout of the long call.
Washington said that Biden reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The two leaders agreed on the importance of continuing to pursue diplomacy and deterrence in response to Russia’s military build-up on Ukraine’s borders,” the White House said.
Zelensky’s office stated that during the call the two also discussed possible economic sanctions against Russia if it attacks Ukraine.
“We are not a NATO member country. Thus, only a strong Ukrainian army can guarantee our state’s security,” Zelensky told Biden.
