Verdict in opposition leader Japaridze’s case to be announced next week

The Tbilisi City Court will deliver its verdict on June 23 in the case of Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the opposition Coalition for Change political alliance.
During today’s court session, the defense concluded its presentation, arguing that the evidence demonstrated Japaridze’s innocence beyond a reasonable doubt. Both the prosecution and defense made their final arguments.
Japaridze did not attend the hearing. However, according to the presiding judge, he will be given the opportunity to make a final statement before the verdict is announced.
The politician is charged under Article 349 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which relates to failure to comply with the lawful request of a temporary investigative commission of parliament which is probing alleged crimes under the previous, United National Movement government. If found guilty, he could face up to one year in prison.
