Opposition member: “Georgia faces repetition of 1921 as Putin controls country”

Salome Samadashvili, a member of the Strong Georgia Coalition, has issued a warning, comparing Georgia’s current political situation to the events of 1921, when the First Republic fell to Soviet forces. Speaking after a meeting with the President at the Orbeliani Palace with opposition leaders, she declared that Georgia is now under “remote control” by Vladimir Putin and called for collective action to save the nation.

Samadashvili drew parallels between historical and contemporary events, stating, “In 1921, the First Republic was overrun by Soviet troops. Today, the Second Republic is being dismantled by a Soviet-Russian special operation.” She emphasized that while tanks and troops are absent this time, Russia’s influence has manifested through “rigged elections and the usurpation of power.”

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, she said, “We are living under a regime of political occupation. Today, Vladimir Putin governs Georgia from a distance.” According to Samadashvili, failing to act now will not only dismantle the state but could also force many Georgians to leave the country.

The opposition leader called on all sectors of society, including public servants and citizens, to stand together to defend Georgia. “This is not just about the government—it is about the survival of our nation and its people,” she warned.

Samadashvili’s remarks follow the statement of the ruling party about the suspension of Georgia’s EU accession process until 2028.
