Moscow pledges to “stabilize” tension on Azerbaijan-Armenia border

"Moscow is in close contact with Baku and Yerevan and is taking necessary measures for the fastest stabilization of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border," Denis Gonchar, director of the fourth department of the CIS countries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said.

"We are in close contact with Baku and Yerevan. We are taking the necessary measures to facilitate the quick stabilization of the situation," he said.

The situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan became tense on Tuesday.

Armenia said it had shelled several towns along the border with Azerbaijan, in response to a "large-scale provocation" by Azerbaijan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, on the other hand, stated that the armed forces of Armenia organized a "large-scale provocation", during which they mined a part of the territory and opened fire on the military positions of Azerbaijan.

About 100 soldiers from Armenia and Azerbaijan have died in the border clashes.
