It’s gov’t task, responsibility to consider PACE resolution, release Saakashvili - UNM’s Dekanoidze

An MP of the United National Movement opposition party, Khatia Dekanoidze, said on Friday that “It is the government's task and responsibility to take into account the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and release former President Mikheil Saakashvili”.

"It is a significant record in a high-ranking resolution. Saakashvili, as a citizen of Ukraine, a president of Georgia, had gone through a war [with Russia]  and opposed [Russian President Vladmir]  Putin. His [Saakashvili’s] health is poor now, everyone says that, and the resolution may help them [the government] to make a decision [on his release]”, - said Dekanoidze.

The resolution adopted on Thursday called for the review of cases of “political prisoners”.

“The Assembly also calls for a review of cases of other political prisoners opposed to President Putin, in the Russian Federation and in other countries, and for their release (including Mikheil Saakashvili, Ukrainian citizen and former President of Georgia)”, said the text.
The resolution, titled ‘Further escalation in the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine,’ was supported by 99 members, with 1 abstention, and no one voting against it.

The document also called for Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia and Ukraine.

Saakashvili, who holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Georgia last October.

He was convicted in Georgia in absentia in 2018 for two separate cases and is now serving his 6-year-term for abuse of power.
