Lawyer calls on politicians not to raise Saakashvili’s issue amid trials

Shalva Khachapuridze, a lawyer of the currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili, on Wednesday called on the politicians both from the ruling party and the opposition not to raise the ex-president’s issue, especially those related to his health, during the trials involving his client, and allows judges work in a calm environment.

The comment came on the heels of a recent statement of Ukrainian MP, Saakashvili’s girlfriend Lisa Yasko, who said that politicians "must stop” using Saakashvili’s health issues for their interests.

Lawyers claim that Saakahsvili’s health condition had deteriorated significantly over the past two months, and he is in “urgent” need of treatment abroad.

The former president, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021.
