NATO’s Stoltenberg stresses importance of Black Sea security in Tbilisi visit

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday emphasized the critical importance of securing the Black Sea for both Georgia and NATO after his meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Tbilisi. He also highlighted how support from the bloc affected the Russian fleet in the sea amid Mosciw’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

"The security of the Black Sea is a pressing concern for both Georgia and NATO. Our collective support has implications for Russia's sizable fleet in the Black Sea. Ukraine's progress is pivotal not only for its own prosperity but also for restoring global food supply chains," stated Stoltenberg during a joint briefing with Kobakhidze, where he also confirmed Georgia's impending membership in NATO as per the decision made at the Bucharest summit.

Stoltenberg stressed the need for Georgia to continue reforms, particularly in ensuring the rule of law and conducting free and fair parliamentary elections this year. He highlighted recent collaboration between Turkey and Georgia, exemplified by a military brigade visit to Batumi, as indicative of the “strong partnership” between NATO and Georgia.

"The recent grant of candidate status to Georgia by the European Council will further bolster the country's aspirations for prosperity and integration with NATO. We will continue to support Georgia's democratic and strategic pursuits," Stoltenberg affirmed.

During his visit to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia from March 17-19, Stoltenberg reaffirmed NATO's commitment to its partners in the region.

For his part, Kobakhidze expressed gratitude for Stoltenberg's “consistent support” for Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations and highlighted the country's “unwavering dedication” to NATO's missions."Amidst the current challenges in Europe, it is imperative for the international community to uphold the principles of international law. We deeply appreciate Secretary General Stoltenberg's visit to Georgia, which underscores NATO's steadfast support for our nation," Kobakhidze concluded.

He also described his country as NATO’s “one of the most trustworthy and reliable allies”.
