Georgia marks Constitution Day today, which was adopted on this day 30 years ago.
On this day in 1995, at 17:50, the Georgian Parliament adopted the country’s Constitution with 159 votes in favour and eight against. The document entered into force once the mandate of the newly elected Parliament of Georgia was recognised later that year.
The State Constitutional Commission initially worked on a new edition of the 1921 Constitution, but ultimately decided to draft an entirely new document.
On September 17, 1995, members of the Commission and Parliament signed the official text of the Constitution at the Government Palace — the same venue where the Supreme Council of Georgia had earlier declared the restoration of the country’s independence.
Since its adoption, Georgia’s Constitution has undergone numerous amendments over the years.
