Water supply to up to 80,000 subscribers in parts of Tbilisi and the Mtskheta area will be temporarily interrupted due to works related to the construction of a new bridge over the Aragvi River, Georgia’s Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure said.

The ministry said a new bridge is being built at the 26th kilometre of the Tbilisi-Senaki-Leselidze highway, and construction is now moving to the stage of building approach roads.

One of Tbilisi’s main water-supply pipelines runs through the construction zone of the approach road and has had to be relocated. The new section has already been installed, but it now needs to be connected to the existing central water-supply network.

The ministry’s Roads Department and Georgian Water and Powers (GWP) have completed the installation of the new main pipeline. To commission it, the system must be connected to the existing network.

For the work to be carried out safely, the central pipeline will have to be emptied. Water supply will be suspended from 03:00 on 26 September until 15:00 on 27 September, with the interruption expected to last approximately 36 hours.

Once the system has been emptied, crews will immediately begin connecting the new pipeline. Work will be carried out simultaneously at several locations around the clock.

The disruption will affect up to 80,000 subscribers, including residents of several Tbilisi districts, the city of Mtskheta, and the villages of Natakhtari and Tsitsamuri, as well as the Tserovani internally displaced persons settlement.

Following completion of the works, the network will be gradually refilled and water supply will be restored in stages, depending on the location and the scale of the network.

The ministry apologised to residents for the disruption and said the works would be carried out continuously according to a pre-prepared plan in an effort to restore water supply within the scheduled timeframe.
