Batumi University Hospital performs Adjara’s first bone marrow transplants

Batumi University Hospital has successfully launched a bone marrow transplantation service, with the first two patients already undergoing the procedure, marking the first time the treatment has been performed in Georgia’s Adjara region.

The introduction of the service means patients can now receive life-saving treatment locally, without having to travel to other regions of Georgia or abroad.

The Adjara Government on Thursday said the regional Ministry of Health has funded bone marrow transplants since 2019, providing between ₾125,000 ($47,534) and ₾235,000 ($89,365) per patient for treatment both in Georgia and overseas.

Since the programme’s launch, 98 patients have received funding, with more than ₾13.3 million ($5.06 million) allocated from the regional budget. In 2026 alone, seven patients have received funding for bone marrow transplantation, amounting to approximately ₾1 million ($380,277).

Adjara’s Health Minister Nino Nizharadze met with patients who recently underwent bone marrow and liver transplants at Batumi University Hospital, describing the introduction of the new service as an important step in expanding access to advanced medical care in the region.

Batumi University Hospital has also been performing liver transplants since 2016. To date, 51 patients have undergone the procedure with government funding, with nearly ₾5 million ($1.90 million) allocated through the programme.
