Tomasz Froelich, a member of the European Parliament from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on Tuesday accused German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer of interfering in domestic politics and said the diplomat should resign.

The criticism followed a social media post by Fischer regarding the results of the parliamentary elections in the German state of Baden‑Württemberg. In the post, the Ambassador said a large majority of voters had supported parties backing liberal democracy and the European Union, while expressing concern about individuals in Georgia who place their hopes in AfD.

In an interview with domestic Imedi TV, Froelich rejected the Ambassador’s assessment of the election results, arguing that it ignored the AfD’s strong performance.

“To me, this is ridiculous. This was the best result the AfD has ever achieved in a state parliamentary election in Western Germany. We doubled our results, rising from 9.7 per cent to 18.8 per cent. If the Ambassador thinks this is not a success, he is simply wrong. That is why I no longer take this man seriously. I think he is doing a poor job overall,” Froelich said.

The MEP argued that a diplomat should avoid commenting on partisan political matters, stressing that an ambassador’s role is to represent their country rather than judge political parties.

“As an Ambassador, he should not comment on federal state elections in Germany. He should focus on representing Germany and the German people in Georgia. Instead, he judges political parties in Germany while he is supposed to represent the country,” Froelich said.

He also accused Fischer of interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs, describing such actions as a lack of respect for the country’s sovereignty.

“He should respect the Georgian people, their will and Georgia’s sovereignty. I believe he is a very bad ambassador and should resign. It is absolutely unacceptable for an ambassador to make such statements. The job of an ambassador is to represent Germany as a state,” Froelich added.

Froelich further argued that criticising AfD’s electoral gains disregards the will of voters in Baden-Württemberg who supported the party, noting that it received 18.8 per cent of the vote in the election.
