Deputy Interior Minister of Georgia, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, took part in the second International Migration Review Forum held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.

The event included multilateral interactive roundtable discussions and a plenary session, during which representatives of member states and international organisations reviewed progress in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

Speaking during one of the roundtable discussions, Darakhvelidze focused on Georgia’s asylum legislation and recent legislative amendments introduced in the country. He said combating illegal migration remains one of the ministry’s priority areas and noted that changes to Georgia’s law on international protection had strengthened deportation procedures.

The deputy minister also highlighted Georgia’s experience and progress in the field of readmission cooperation.

The International Migration Review Forum serves as the main intergovernmental global platform for member states to exchange information and assess progress related to the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration.

Georgia’s delegation to the forum, composed of representatives from various state agencies, is headed by Deputy Justice Minister Giorgi Dgebuadze, the ministry said.
