Active public can overcome 'oligarchic regime', opposition leader Tsitlidze

Georgian opposition politician Anna Tsitlidze said an active public was essential to bringing political change, arguing that no authoritarian system was permanent and urging citizens not to lose hope.

Speaking on Monday, Tsitlidze, one of the leaders of the United National Movement, said ordinary Georgians should believe that an "oligarchic regime" would not last indefinitely.

"The Soviet Union eventually collapsed. There is no tyranny that lasts forever," she said.

Tsitlidze argued that overcoming public nihilism required a joint effort by politicians, civil society and the broader public to convince people that political change was possible.

She further added that those opposing the government faced significant challenges but maintained that only an active society could succeed in confronting what she described as an "oligarchic regime."

Tsitlidze also said that despair and political apathy were not the answer, arguing that continued civic activism could influence those who had remained silent.
