European Council President António Costa, along with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, has expressed strong support for the people of Georgia and their democratic aspirations.

Following a joint call with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, Costa condemned the Georgian government’s violent response to peaceful protests. “We condemn the violence against peaceful protestors,” Costa wrote on social media.

He further criticized the government’s actions, stating, “Actions of [the Georgian] government run counter to the will of the people. The EU stands with the people of #Georgia.”

The call comes amid growing unrest in Georgia over delays in its EU accession process. Both Costa and Kallas reiterated the European Union’s commitment to supporting democracy, human rights, and the aspirations of the Georgian people to align more closely with the EU.
