Georgian ruling party MP Archil Gorduladze has accused former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of using “simple lies” and speculation in an attempt to defend himself, saying his recent statements only highlight his “regrettable situation.”

“It is difficult to speak about a former leader of the ruling team who has been exposed in a crime, admitted to the crime and is now trying to present himself differently, using speculation, including lies that cannot be given any legal assessment,” Gorduladze said.

“He builds his speculation on simple lies and is trying to save himself. All of this highlights his regrettable situation. The lower the quality of the letters Irakli Garibashvili publishes, the more difficult his situation will become,” he added.

Gorduladze said Garibashvili should instead accept the court ruling and the charges he had admitted to.

“It would be better for him to accept what he has admitted to and the charges on which there is already a court ruling,” Gorduladze said.

Garibashvili, who is currently in prison, has recently published a series of letters in which he has accused the Georgian authorities of political persecution and claimed that corruption charges were brought against him to prevent his return to politics.
