Ruling party MP: Kos’ remarks would mean EU members should cut ties with the US

Georgian ruling party MP Archil Gorduladze has criticised European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos over her call for EU candidate countries to sever ties with US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement.

“If we follow Marta Kos’s logic, all EU member states should be cutting ties with the United States. What other logic is there behind banning candidate countries from maintaining relations with the current US administration if EU member states themselves continue those relations?” Gorduladze said.

Kos recently said countries seeking EU membership should distance themselves from the MAGA movement, arguing that the EU should not risk future member states developing dependencies that conflict with the bloc’s long-term interests.

Gorduladze stressed the remarks demonstrated a “lack of respect” for the sovereignty of other countries.

“European bureaucracy is saying that candidate countries will have no right to speak up once they join the EU. Even before becoming members, they are being given conditions that supposedly require them not to pursue an independent foreign policy,” Gorduladze said.

He described Kos’s remarks as further evidence of what he called the US administration’s view that the EU is “on the verge of a civilisational abyss.”

“Unfortunately, there are people within the EU who are deliberately undermining the foundations of the European Union and acting against its interests,” Gorduladze said, adding that such actions served the interests of forces seeking to weaken individual countries and increase their own influence over them.

He also criticised EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and said both Kallas and Kos were pursuing such interests.

“It is in this context that the attacks against our country, which is standing up against disinformation, should be understood,” Gorduladze said.
