The US Embassy in Tbilisi has welcomed the arrest of several individuals accused of defrauding Georgian citizens in connection with illegal entry into the United States and document forgery.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Embassy said the arrests were the result of months of close cooperation between US and Georgian law enforcement agencies.

“We welcome the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia’s announcement today about the arrest of several individuals on charges of defrauding Georgian citizens related to illegal entry to the United States and document forgery,” the statement said.

“It is the result of months of strong law enforcement cooperation between the United States and Georgia. Thank you to the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and Georgian law enforcement officials involved in the investigation and operation,” the statement added.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the arrests followed a joint operation conducted by Georgian prosecutors and the US Embassy’s Regional Security Office. Authorities said the investigation led to the identification of two organised criminal groups allegedly involved in the scheme.
