Former Georgian Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after being convicted of publicly calling for the overthrow of the government.
Tbilisi City Court Judge Romeo Tkeshelashvili on Monday found Akhalaia guilty of the charge and handed down the sentence.
Akhalaia was expected to deliver his final statement at the hearing but did not attend the court session.
The case concerned statements prosecutors said amounted to calls for the violent change of Georgia's constitutional order and the overthrow of the government.
Prosecutors filed a second charge against Akhalaia on 27 March under Article 317 of Georgia's Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
